Kwa-Thema – The Republican Trinity Church of Southern Africa in Endicott honoured their beloved Bishop Timothy S. Shabangu through a heartfelt blanket drive on June 29.
The theme of the day was “Noma sebafile,” meaning “even though they have passed away.”
Tshabangu was a well-known religious leader and a prominent community activist who dedicated his life to uplifting the poor and vulnerable.
“He was born in June and passed away on June 25, 2021. Every year in his birth month, he would give food parcels to elders in the church as a way of celebrating,” explained Rev Veli Nkosi.
“This year, we wanted to do things differently. We gave blankets to the elders of the church to help keep them warm this winter.”
Nkosi said they aimed to continue the legacy Bishop Shabangu left behind. The church raised funds for the initiative and distributed 25 blankets on the day.
“Winter is a very cold season, and everyone deserves to be warm. Our elders need blankets to wrap around themselves while in church,” he added.
“Bishop Shabangu was committed to community work and empowerment. He was a full package – a loving person, a singer, and an advisor.”

The youth in attendance were also given valuable insights into the bishop’s life and his many acts of kindness. Reverend Bathatheni Mthimunye, who knew the late bishop personally, led a special lecture in his honour.
The day included a warm meal for church members and words of encouragement for those in need. Nkosi extended his gratitude to the Endicott community and the local ward councillor for their continued support of the church.
“I would also like to thank the congregation for always participating in our fundraising and church activities. We welcome donations from the public, whether in the form of food, clothing, or monetary contributions,” he said.
“School children are still in need of both winter and summer clothing, school shoes, and other essential supplies,” he concluded.
