Montsi lost his job in 2014, and it was his younger brother who suggested he start selling the African Reporter.
“My brother said people need the paper, and that we could add it to whatever else we were selling,” Montsi recalled.
From there, he branched into other ventures.
“I went on to sell cigarettes and kotas, and eventually opened a tuck shop,” he said.
As demand grew, Montsi began employing others to sell the newspaper in various parts of Kwa-Thema.
“I placed people in areas like Shabangu, Shoprite, Sam Ngema, Extension 4, Interland and Extension 3. The number of sellers goes up and down throughout the year,” he explained.
Montsi highlighted the potential earnings from selling the paper.
“One bundle costs R75 and contains 100 papers, so you can make 100% profit. That’s a lot. The profit can sustain you throughout the week until the next Friday,” he said.

To support others, Montsi also assists by placing bulk orders and delivering bundles free of charge.
“We help others by ordering on their behalf and delivering the bundles without charging extra.”
However, he noted that a lack of awareness is a major obstacle.
“Many people don’t know how to start selling the paper or where to get it,” he said.
