Michael Rider has been named the new creative director of Celine, replacing Hedi Slimane (Photo: Getty Images; Celine) Fashion thrives on change, and behind these status-quo-challenging shakeups often lie designers. Gabrielle Chanel’s singular vision to liberate women from restrictive clothing spurred the immense success of her label, Chanel, and then there’s Daniel Lee, whose tenure at Bottega Veneta saw fringed skirts and the inception of celebrity-favourite It-bags like the Jodie, which ushered in a new era of youthfulness at the historic Italian label. This undercurrent of change is more relevant than ever in 2024, considering the reshuffling of personnel at…
The California Gold Rush changed the country forever. 300,000 people came from across the US and every corner of the world to strike it rich. Dozens of towns sprang up overnight in what was once the backwaters of Mexico, sparsely populated with Native Americans. While the 1849 Gold Rush had terrible consequences for the indigenous people, a fact that can’t be overstated, The Rush is what gave California its foundation as the most diverse state in the country, its entrepreneurial spirit, and its love of adventure. To get back to California’s Wild West roots and many of my favorite places as…
Ballet flats originated in the world of dance. Their design, characterized by a flat sole and lightweight construction, was initially created to accord dancers with the freedom and flexibility needed for their performances. The transition from the stage to the streets began in the early 20th century, as designers recognized the economic potential of these shoes to offer both elegance and comfort. And yet again, designer ballet flats are making a grand re-entrance, pirouetting their way into the spotlight once more! These heel-devoid shoes, once the darlings of every chic wardrobe, have reclaimed their crown. Photo credit: Creative Lab/Shutterstock.com In…
Meetings after meetings, they can’t seem to take a break and are always pushing themselves to be the best. They need a bag that can keep up with their lifestyle, a solid and chic companion that can accompany them to meetings carrying all work-essentials. At couture we have Tote bags, cross bodies, and backpacks that fit that description. They are driven by the need to explore different places, see everything for themselves, and live the thrill of traveling into the unknown. What they need is a solid, practical, good-quality travel companion with a bit of style to accompany them across…
At any given time, you’ll find four or more parenting books on my Amazon wish list, a few by my nightstand, and an email inbox chock full of insightful parenting theories and approaches. Granted, child development is my career, but I speak with plenty of parents in my practice who find themselves in similar circumstances. With information around every corner and our culture projecting constant messages (many times contradictory) regarding how we should raise our kids, feeling like a confident and intentional parent can seem out of reach many days. As a family therapist, I’ve seen many well-intentioned parents mistakenly…
All of us can recall experiences of rejection, whether in our professional lives, social circles, or romantic relationships. For many, the initial disappointment fades quickly, managed through effective coping strategies. However, for some people, rejection can trigger an intense emotional reaction that feels disproportionate to the situation. This response can spiral into a cycle of hurt feelings, conflict, and negativity. In such cases, it might be more than just rejection sensitivity but Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) may be at play. What does Rejection Sensitivity look like in relationships? To better understand how RSD manifests in real-life situations, we can imagine a common…

ON THE BLOGS THIS WEEK: Fresh apples, dried fruits, nuts, creamy oats, and brown sugar create a deliciously filling hot breakfast. Less than 15 minutes from start to finish, a piping hot, warm, and creamy bowl of holiday oatmeal can be on your table.…
The National Treasury has revived its plans to impose a five percent withholding tax on interest earned on infrastructure bonds with tenures of at least three years. The infrastructure bonds (IFBs) have been tax-free since they were first issued in February 2009 —meaning that they will be taxed for the first time if the proposal, which was previously contained in the shelved controversial Finance Bill, 2024, is approved by Parliament. “The proposed Tax Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 proposes to introduce taxation of interest income from infrastructure bonds at the rate of five percent. This will apply to the bonds that…
