Kwa-Thema – The Mgazi Super 16 Diski Tournament wrapped up its semi-finals and final in exciting fashion at the Kwa-Thema Stadium on June 28 and 29.
The Underdogs FC emerged as runners-up after a nail-biting final that ended in a draw and was decided by six penalty shootouts. Tournament organiser Sibusiso Gwatuli, who also manages the Underdogs FC, praised the event.
“The running of the tournament was transparent and fair. It helped us learn to prepare and organise better for future games,” said Gwatuli.
Despite their strong showing, the Underdogs FC faced several hurdles on their path to the final.
“We don’t have sponsors, our player group is small, and we had to use money from our own pockets to cover the costs because we recently started,” Gwatuli explained.
“Logistics was another challenge because the boys do not all live in the same area, so some had to be fetched from Springs, Lesley and Tsakane. The boys from Leachville had to be Bolted to the tournament,” he said.
Sibusiso had to boost the team’s momentum after several players were injured during the shootout.
“Three out of the six players who took penalties had injuries, and I had to encourage the players to face the penalties head-on. This would help them prepare better for future penalties,” said Gwatuli.
The top three teams to walk away with prize money were Simunye FC, in the top spot, with R50 000, and the Underdogs FC with R30 000 for their runner-up finish. The Izinyosi FC and the Amajimbos FC shared third place, splitting R20 000.
